Help! My Intercultural Relationship is in Need…of a Karaoke Song.

A plea for help from guest contributer, NeoKalypso

R and I both love music, play instruments, and love to sing. Throw on the Rent soundtrack in our car and you’ve got a live show. For a while now, we have been looking for a specifc song to do as a karaoke duet. We’re stumped. “Islands in the Stream” has been taken by another couple, “Somewhere Out There” is a little high for me and a little cheezy, and “Baby Baby” is really just for one person, Amy Grant, to sing.

Does anybody out there have a fun song idea for our karaoke debut as a couple? Whoever suggests the winning song will receive a free DVD of our performance. And humm… I wonder if GoriGirl has audio capabilities…

“Summer Nights” – Newton-John, Olivia & John Travolta
“You’re The One I Want” -Olivia Newton John & John Travolta
“i’ve got you babe” – sonny and cher
“Friends in Low Places” – Garth Brooks (no point.. I just like this as a karaoke song!)
“Don’t Go Breakin My Heart” – Elton John & Kiki Dee
“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell
    “Hakuna Matata” - Lion King

Haha if you want something new sing that new Justin Timberlake and Madonna song (4 minutes to save the world)! J/K

All very random… I think Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart is the cutest! :) Good luck!

Are you looking for something specifically intercultural? :)

There’s always “Ebony and Ivory.” ;)

Or you could sing “O Rey Chhori” from Lagaan…

Well, I love 9 Crimes by Damien Rice, but it’s probably a bit too “indie” and decidedly not upbeat for karaoke. Hmmm… Disney songs have a fair number of duets, and they tend to be quite reasonable in their vocal requirements – would something like “A Whole New World” work (Edit: this is what I get for not refreshing before commenting), or is Disney a bit too childish/cheezy? Then there’s a couple of good duets from Moulin Rouge (amazing movie!). If you search youtube with just “duet” you get a pretty good list.

… How about Barbie Girl? :D

Pale_Desi – you beat me to the punch!

I’ll add to the list that “Cruisin’” song Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis sang in that karaoke movie a few years ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D-ZGrYSRBs.

My favorite duet is “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (esp. the Ray Charles/Betty Carter version) – but that’s probably makes more sense in the winter.

On a similar note :) , I can’t come up with good entrance music for M and I at our wedding reception. My instrumental version of the Muppet Show theme song idea (which was absolutely brilliant btw) got completely vetoed by M. He wants Pirates of the Caribbean music which is cute but too ominous. Any suggestions?

Ohhh the wheels are spinning now…

Amanda: we sing A Whole New World often in the car (you know when we are not getting tatooed or doing drugs…had to slip that in there for ya CT!!!!)–it’s a definite possibility—but YEA it IS SUPER cheezy…(I swear we are actually kind of cool in real life–R’s going to KILL me for writing this post BTW!)

Blue: not looking for anything specifically intercultural..but I WILL check that ebony/ivory song… and it might be fun to do some sort of “chocolaty themed” song…since I love my chocolaty man! Hehehehh…

Pale desi: GREAT ones, I will run them all by R~~~!!!

    WHoo hoo good times!!

And, might I add, we are willing to create a full-on dance routine to accompany this as well.

I’m going to be watching Superhero movies all summer because of this post…

Hey Blue – I’m a big follower of your blog (altho I don’t think I’ve ever commented… *shame face*). Didn’t know you were reading GoriGirl. :) I’ve always wanted to ask you if you wear salwars with jeans, or proper Indian pants…

A bit off the charts, but why not oldies? (Mostly acoustic guitar songs)
    1. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young – Teach your children
    2. Simon & Garfunkel, Mrs. Robinson.
    3. Joni Mitchell, singing one of the greatest songs (rather, poems) ever written, Both Sides Now.
    4. Temptations, My girl
    5. Elton John, Benny and the Jets.
    6. Alan Parsons, Eye in the Sky.

etc, etc. Good luck with the karaoke.

Yo! Didn’t know you read my blog!

Currently I wear my khameez-cum-kurtas with jeans. I’ve gotten enough flak about appropriating salwars.

I’ve been lurking on your blog for a while, too. Intercultural relationships FTW!

Quizman—I love the song Both Sides Now. That’s a little older Joni — Blue was my favorite album of hers ever (how ironic, we have a blue commenting here!)

CT….again….ANOTHER weird connection. Ravi and I LOVE (and were rehearsing) Baby it’s Cold Outside all winter!! We would pull up the lyrics and sing it to each other over the phone.

Right now I’m kind of sold on “Don’t go Breakin My Heart.” We could do a super fun dance routine too…

CT – The entrance/introduction music for my and G’s wedding was from Guys and Dolls (we’re big musical nerds, though). The wedding party walked in to “Luck be a Lady” and G & I walked in to the Guys & Dolls theme song, specifically the lines, “When you see a guy reach for stars in the sky, you can bet that he’s doing it for his doll.” Yeah, we’re cheesy. :)

NK – I’ll try to think of some tatooed druggie theme songs for you guys, but I’m crazy busy at work so I don’t really have time right now! :-P

    Ebony and Ivory?! Tooo funny!

I like “A whole new world”, and it would be fitting but yeah really cheesy, hehe.

I’ll get back if I think of anything!

Oh, and Pretty Blue Salwars, I read you too ;)

D – “Guys & Dolls” is my all time favorite musical! I’m a cheesy musical nerd too! I love both those songs- “When you meet a gent paying all kinds of rent for a flat that could flatten the Taj Mahal!” How perfect! Btw, the Guys and Dolls composer, Frank Loesser, also wrote the lyrics to “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”. (Just a little piece of musical nerd trivia for you all.)

NK suggested “Om Shanti Om” which would be fun too. It’s all a matter of convincing M that it’s okay to enter to something fun, colorful, and lively. He wants music that makes us seem heroic (and apparently to him, heroic = scary pirate music). Go figure.

If you prefer Hindi, try this song. The lyrics are here.
It is a copy of a salsa by Edmundo Ros (Chico, Chico). The lyrics are apt for you two. :-)

“Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
“You’re the One That I Want” by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John
“Endless Love” by Diana Ross and Lionel Ritchie

Well, that’s all I have that sound kinda fun for you two…

Oh I for one already have Om Shanti Om on my iPod. I love running to Dard-e-Disco and Deewangi Deewangi… the songs make me happy! :) I think a lot of bollywood songs are perfect for running/working out. Also try It’s the Time to Disco and Maahi Ve from Kal Ho Na Ho! :) My boyfriend is a big SRK fan… so I’m exposed to all of SRK’s movies and I love the music!!
Tangent: I’m going to run my 1st 1/2 marathon in August… and these songs are going to help pull me through!! :)

NK – I’ve had the song in my head all weekend! It’s great! I’ve been listening to it via YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IHGFPs6Rt4
I just played it for M, and he really liked it. Especially the part in the video where Shah Rukh Khan was dressed up like a pirate. Anyway, I think we may go with it. At the wedding you went to did they play it just for the entrance of the bride and groom or for the entrance of the wedding party (if there was one) too? I’m trying to decide if we should have two songs or just one.

I’m sure it’s considered really old now, but another bollywood-esque song I love is “Aaja Nachle” which was in “Monsoon Wedding”. You’re right Pale_Desi – these are great work out/running songs! Congrats on training for your first 1/2 marathon! I can guarantee you – you’ll have a blast! I’m gearing 4th marathon this October. I never thought I’d run one, let alone four – it’s addictive!

The Om Shanti Om video was on AVS a couple of weeks ago, and I made G watch it. He loved that Bollywood finally caught onto the whole “the song should have something to do with the movie” thing and that the video was so much like Phantom of the Opera (one of our favorites). I also love Dard-e-Disco — not only is the song good, but SRK is looking damn fine in the video. Neither of us actually watch any Bollywood movies, but I watch AVS/Namaste America/etc. every weekend.

Off topic, but G and I saw Ironman over the weekend, and decided that the soundtrack to that movie would be great workout music – lots of exciting, fast, hard rock kind of stuff.
