Well, today is the first day of the forums, the day before my birthday, and Mother's Day!
Re: Mother's Day: Overall, I'm a very lucky daughter – my mom is one of my biggest cheerleaders – she loves this blog, although she doesn't comment here (I think she still worries that I'm my bitchy teenage self, and will complain about her embarrassing me, like I did when I was 13 and wanted her to stay at least two stores away while shopping at the mall.) Anyways, love you, Mom! Turn on your cell phone if you're reading this.
Re: My birthday: Main thought is that I'm no longer a prime number. Aditya got me wii games and we went to a cooking class on Friday where the chief taught us how to make some really delicious Indian dishes. It's so much more fun cooking in a professional kitchen with people to clean up after you.
Re: forums: I hope you all like 'em.

Happy birthday! Sounds like you had a fabulous time. Will you be sharing any recipes?
So cool that your mom keeps up with the blog. Hi, Gori's mom!
re: Mother's day. We went out with both of our moms (and rest of our immediate families) yesterday so that we wouldn't have to choose between them. That's one of the advantages of living so close to both of our families — less divvying up of holidays. Although we still have to split up the big holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Yay for the forums! It should be fun.

I really envy you living close to your family, if only for travel reasons. We're on the east coast, my family (and his brother) are on the west coast, and the rest of his family is in India. It seems like every vacation we're going either to California or India – not it's such a hardship to travel there, but there are other places I'd like to see too.

Happy belated birthday, Gori! And hi, D! It's good to "see" you both!
We spent Mother's Day at M's Auntie and Uncle's house. His cousin is getting married, and we had the invitation addressing ceremony. I think this may be a tradition particular to his family – each male in order of age addresses an invitation and presents it to another family member. The women take turns in order of age rolling out papad dough to wish the marrying family member a happy life. Since my husband is the eldest cousin, I was the first of the younger generation of women to roll out the papad dough. Even though they are gender segregated rituals, I enjoyed participating and having a special role. M had a ceremony like this for our wedding, but I didn't attend because it's usually only a gathering of the bride or groom and his or her own side of the family.
I also gave my MIL some flowers for her garden which I think she really liked. M's family isn't big on things like Mother's/Father's Day or even birthdays. They never give cards/gifts or go out and celebrate, but I can't do that. I feel compelled to do a least a little something for MIL especially because she's been so nice to me.

I much prefer the gift of live, potted flowers to just those you can stick in a vase, CT. Good low-key choice. (Aditya's family is aboslutely crazy about birthdays – woe to them who fail to make a phone call to send good wishes.)
This week at work has been absolutely dead, so I guess it was a good time to start up the forum (and to start twittering) – I can get all the back-end kinks worked out now, since I have to be at the office anyways.

Happy Belated Birthday!!!
I've been working far too much lately and this is my first time back here this week…so I missed the actual day. However, the sentiments are the same!
Many happy returns of the day!
PS: Mine is this month too! ;) Just 4 more days…and Bear isn't here! Bleck!

Happy late birthday, Aurora.
Does anyone have cool plans for the Mememorial Day weekend?
Aditya and I will be meeting up with Amanda (from Amanda Takes Off, not any of you other Amandas running around) to hang out & eat delicious Chinese food this Friday, hosting a BBQ this Saturday, going hiking on Sunday with the pooches (they have backpacks to carry all the gear so that we don't have to do anything!), and then chilling and probably cleaning up the house on Monday. We have a lot of gardening ahead of us on Saturday, too, since right now the backyard is, quite literally, a mud pit. Rolled sod, here we come! (House are exhausting!)
Luckily, the weather forecast for the DC region is really nice – low 80s, little humidity, light breeze.

I suppose we should start the June '09 Chat thread, but to answer your question, GG — we went to a destination wedding in Colombia over the Memorial Day weekend. It was for G's cousin, who is half Indian and half Jewish, and his Colombian wife. Very multicultural! They did a Catholic wedding one day and a Hindu wedding the next day. The groom's Jewish background was celebrated during the reception following the Hindu wedding by the groom breaking a glass and everyone dancing the Hora. The reception following the Catholic wedding was very fun, too — they hired some Carnivale dancers, and I have hilarious pictures of my MIL in a feathered mask and her sari dancing with a half-naked Colombian man.
I hope you were able to get some work done in your yard!
