As someone who also is slowly wrapping their mind around Dravidian languages (first Tamil, and then Telugu, you'll have your turn), I might suggest first identifying how you feel most comfortable with learning a new language. For the longest, I listened to Tamil songs, and could pick up a few words, but no more than I have fingers on one hand. I found a combination of learning technics to be most helpful. When I was going to meet my husband's parents for the first time, I fostered the crazy idea of learning both Tamil and Telugu at the same time (his parents speak Telugu, but live in Tamil Nadu). During the bout of crazy linguistic ambition, I picked up 'Telugu: Self-Taught' by Das Gupta Prakashan at a small foreign language bookstore. The book was helpful in organizing my challenge and allowing me to see words, although it's helpful to double-check some words against your husband because of sometimes poor Telugu-to-English translation or inaccurate phonetic guidance. This leads to my next suggestion: Use your husband as your language coach. We have a word of the day, and that has been very helpful and not too annoying for either party… yet. :) Also, listening to Telugu music can be a helpful reinforcement for both the book and the language coach. Good luck!
